APPLICATION PROJECT-
A HAPPY MARRIAGE

As the basis for my application project I used Elder Nelson’s talk “Nurturing Marriage” in which he suggests steps for having a more joyful marriage.

Step one was to “comprehend the doctrinal foundation for marriage”. As I gathered my quotes, we studied and discussed the conference talks together. It was really helpful for us to begin this way, because it made sure that we were on the same page for our understanding and vision for the following weeks.

The second step Elder Nelson suggested was to strengthen marriage in three categories: appreciate, communicate, and contemplate. We prayerfully discussed the suggestions Elder Nelson offered as well as the counsel we found in the other talks we studied and chose several specific actions to work on over the remaining weeks of the project. At the end of each week, we sat down after church and discussed how we felt the week had gone and where we were in our goals and then set new goals for the next week.

I think the most significant change I’d like to continue with now that the project is over is actually the one that wasn't on our list of goals. The time we spent studying together, setting goals, and discussing our projects brought us closer together. Our week went so much better because we had that opportunity to regroup and share. We got to feel the spirit as we enthusiastically shared our insights and bore our testimonies on the topics we discussed. We plan on continuing a weekly study session where we can share insights, set goals, and evaluate our progress together. Our home has had more love, peace, and less contention, and I do feel like we have had a more “joyful marriage” because of this experience.
