STRESS MANAGEMENT

1.

The Redeemer will safely lead you over the most difficult obstacles of life. His laws are absolutely secure anchors of protection that dispel fear and assure success in an otherwise dangerous world. Such a life will certainly provide you peace and happiness... Peace and happiness are the precious fruits of a righteous life. They are only possible because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ."
Elder Richard G. Scott- General Conference October 2006 "The Atonement Can Secure Your Peace and Happiness" https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2006/10/the-atonement-can-secure-your-peace-and-happiness?lang=eng

2.

"[A] mistake we can make is that we maybe don’t take life’s little quizzes seriously enough. We think we will cram and pass the final exam! The infinite Atonement is there for our finite mistakes, including the daily mistakes we tend to make. It is understandable, of course, that we focus on the crunch times in our lives. We are mindful of these spikes of suffering and stress, and we sometimes, ironically, let ourselves become overcome by relentless routineness—with what might be called the daily dampening of things spiritual."

"If we are meek, being tried means being developed... We may feel put upon by events and circumstances—another mistake we can make when not approaching the Atonement properly. Yet many of these things that we feel put upon by actually constitute the customized curricula needed for our personal development.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell- Ensign July 2002 "The Holy Ghost: Glorifying Christ" https://www.lds.org/ensign/2002/07/the-holy-ghost-glorifying-christ?lang=eng

3.

"When we keep the temple covenants we have made and when we live righteously in order to maintain the blessings promised by those ordinances, then come what may, we have no reason to worry or to feel despondent."
Elder Richard G. Scott- General Conference April 2009 "Temple Worship: The Source of Strength and Power in Times of Needhttps://www.lds.org/general-conference/2009/04/temple-worship-the-source-of-strength-and-power-in-times-of-need?lang=eng

4.

"True, enduring happiness, with the accompanying strength, courage, and capacity to overcome the greatest difficulties, will come as you center your life in Jesus Christ. Obedience to His teachings provides a secure ascent in the journey of life. That takes effort. While there is no guarantee of overnight results, there is the assurance that, in the Lord’s time, solutions will come, peace will prevail, and happiness will be yours."
Elder Richard G. Scott- General Conference October 2006 "The Atonement Can Secure Your Peace and Happiness" https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2006/10/the-atonement-can-secure-your-peace-and-happiness?lang=eng

5.

"We often feel overwhelmed by the task before us. However, help is ever at hand. He who knows each of His children will answer our fervent and heartfelt prayer as we seek help in guiding them. Such prayer will solve more problems, alleviate more suffering, prevent more transgression, and bring about greater peace and contentment in the human soul than any other way."
President Thomas S. Monson- Ensign June 2006 "Heavenly Homes, Forever Families" https://www.lds.org/ensign/2006/06/heavenly-homes-forever-families?lang=eng

6.

"If life and its rushed pace and many stresses have made it difficult for you to feel like rejoicing, then perhaps now is a good time to refocus on what matters most."

"Strength comes not from frantic activity but from being settled on a firm foundation of truth and light. It comes from placing our attention and efforts on the basics of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It comes from paying attention to the divine things that matter most. Let us simplify our lives a little. Let us make the changes necessary to refocus our lives on the sublime beauty of the simple, humble path of Christian discipleship—the path that leads always toward a life of meaning, gladness, and peace."

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf- General Conference 2010 "Of Things That Matter Most" https://www.lds.org/ensign/2006/06/heavenly-homes-forever-families?lang=eng

7.

“Don’t rationalize away future happiness by taking shortcuts instead of applying sound gospel principles. Remember: little things lead to big things… simple, consistent, good habits lead to a life full of bountiful blessings... We need not worry if we can’t simultaneously do all of the things that the Lord has counseled us to do. He has spoken of a time and a season for all things. In response to our sincere prayers for guidance, He will direct us in what should be emphasized at each phase of our life. We can learn, grow, and become like Him one consistent step at a time.”
Elder Richard G. Scott, General Conference April 2013 “For Peace at Home” https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2013/04/for-peace-at-home?lang=eng

8.

“None of us can do it alone. … Prayer will change your life. It will bring you peace. It will give you direction and guidance. It will help you feel that you are not alone in this big and sometimes brutal world. The Lord answers our prayers. I know that.”
President Gordon B. Hinckley- Ensign March 2007 "News of the Church" https://www.lds.org/ensign/2007/03/news-of-the-church?lang=eng

9.

I wish to speak pointedly about how to have a very special kind of confidence—a confidence which, when rightfully earned, does wonders for every other aspect of our lives, especially our self-esteem and how we view the future... [personal worthiness].
Think the best and hope the best and have faith in the future. You have a great life ahead of you. Your Heavenly Father loves you. If any mistakes have been made, they can be repented of and forgiven just as they were for this young man. You have everything to live for and plan for and believe in. To have the approval of your conscience when you are alone with your memories allows you to feel the Spirit of God in a very personal way. I want you to enjoy that Spirit, to feel that confidence in the presence of the Lord always."
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland- Liahona April 2014 "The Confidence of Worthiness" https://www.lds.org/ensign/2007/03/news-of-the-church?lang=eng

10.

"When the lesson you are to learn is very important, trials can extend over a long period of time, but they should not be allowed to become the confining focus of everything you do. Your life can and should be wondrously rewarding. It is your understanding and application of the laws of God that will give your life glorious purpose as you ascend and conquer the difficulties of life. That perspective keeps challenges confined to their proper place—stepping-stones to further growth and attainment... Trust in the Lord. Ask to be led by the Spirit to know His will. Be willing to accept it. You will then qualify for the greatest happiness and the heights of attainment from this mortal experience."
Elder Richard G. Scott- General Conference October 2006 "The Holy Ghost: Glorifying Christ" https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2006/10/the-atonement-can-secure-your-peace-and-happiness?lang=eng

Bonus:

"Be happy and healthy and optimistic!"

MY THOUGHTS

A lot of the talks I found that addressed having peace and happiness and dispelling fear were actually about implementing the atonement in your life. I think this is a powerful discovery: one of the best ways to manage my stress level is to make sure I am using the atonement every day. Studying these talks renewed my testimony that my Heavenly Father does love me and want me to be happy, and that if I follow His plan for me I can find peace and happiness in the midst of adversity and challenge. I found some helpful specific principles that I am trying to use: re-centering on what matters most, relying on prayer, finding confidence through personal worthiness, remembering that God has a plan for me, etc. I am grateful for a Heavenly Father who provides not just for my salvation but also for my happiness. I know that whatever challenges I and my family face, He will not leave me alone.
